Ultraviolet stability is not a feature you add to an outdoor floor. It is a property of the resin, decided when the material is manufactured, and no topcoat, sealer or additive turns a UV-sensitive product into a UV-stable one. Everything else on an exterior floor follows from that one decision.

Aliphatic and aromatic, in plain terms
Resins fall broadly into two families. Aromatic chemistry, which includes standard epoxy and most cheap urethanes, has a molecular structure that ultraviolet light picks apart. Aliphatic chemistry, which is where polyaspartic and quality polyurea sit, does not have that weak point.
You do not need the chemistry to make a decision, but you do need the vocabulary, because it is how you tell a real specification from a sales line. UV stable is a claim anyone can print. Naming the product and its family is a claim you can check.
Florida makes this matter more than almost anywhere. The sun angle is high, the exposure runs all twelve months, and reflected light off a pool, a light-colored wall or a white roof adds to the load on a slab that is already taking it directly.

What failure actually looks like
The first sign is a color shift that only shows where the sun lands. A deck that ran one even gray now has a warm patch under the west opening, and because it came on gradually most people notice it in a photograph rather than in person.
Next comes gloss loss. The surface goes flat and slightly cloudy, then powdery. Rub it with a dry hand and you pick up a fine dust. That is the resin breaking down, and it means the protective layer is thinning from the top.
After that it is water. Once the surface is porous, moisture and salt reach the bond line, and you get edge lifting, blisters and eventually sheets. By that stage a recoat will not save it, because the new material is bonding to a failing layer instead of to concrete.
Specifying a floor that holds up
The topcoat carries the UV load, so that is where the aliphatic material goes and where the money should be. Underneath it we build with whatever is right for the substrate, and epoxy is frequently the correct choice down there because nothing that deep in the stack sees sunlight.
Pigment quality matters too. Cheap colourants fade even in a stable resin, so the blends and base colors we use outdoors are chosen for lightfastness rather than for how vivid they look in a sample tray under fluorescent light.
Then there is what the floor is next to. If a lanai and a pool deck are meant to match, both need the same UV behavior, or in three years they will not match any more even though they started identical. That is worth planning at the quoting stage rather than discovering later.
Preparation
What happens before any resin comes out
Outdoor concrete in Florida takes ultraviolet light, standing water and constant vapor from below, so preparation matters even more here than it does inside.
Grinding comes first, always. Diamond tooling opens the surface so the coating has something to bite into, because a coating bonds mechanically rather than by sticking. The etching kit sold with retail epoxy does almost nothing to a slab that was power troweled smooth, which is most of them.
Moisture is the second reading. Concrete here pushes water vapor up through itself day and night, and a coating that seals it in will blister and let go regardless of what it cost. High numbers mean a moisture-tolerant primer goes down first, not that we carry on and hope.
Cracks get chased out to a clean edge and filled rather than skimmed over, spalls and pop-outs get rebuilt, and any previous coating comes off entirely. Only when the slab is sound, open and dry does anything get mixed.
The finish is what you see. The grind underneath it is what decides whether you are still happy in year eight, and it is where we spend the time other quotes save money.
It is also why we will occasionally tell someone their slab needs repair before it needs a coating. A floor that should be fixed structurally is not a floor we will put resin on, because the crack comes back through and then it is our name on it.

How much does uv-resistant outdoor floor coatings cost?
Price follows square footage, the condition of the slab and the system you choose. A sound slab that only needs grinding costs far less to prepare than one with cracks, old coating or a moisture problem. We look at the floor and give you a real number rather than a range that means nothing.
How long does uv-resistant outdoor floor coatings take?
Most residential work is two to four days on site depending on size and system. Commercial and industrial floors are scheduled around your hours and often run nights or weekends. You get exact dates before we start, including when you can walk on it and when you can put weight on it.
Do you grind the floor first?
Always. Diamond grinding is the only way to get a profile the coating can key into, and it is the single biggest reason floors either last or fail. We do not acid etch and we do not coat over a sealed slab.
What about moisture in the slab?
Florida slabs move water upward constantly, and vapor trapped under a coating is a guaranteed failure. We take a reading before quoting. If the numbers are high we specify a moisture-tolerant primer rather than pretending the problem is not there.
Can you match a color or a look I have seen?
Usually. We carry eighteen flake blends and mix metallic per floor, so bring a photo, a cabinet door or a paint chip and we will get close. We put samples down in your own light before you commit.
