Surface preparation is not one method. It is a decision: what is on this slab, what is going on top of it, and therefore how much texture does the concrete need. Get that decision right and the rest is execution. Get it wrong and no amount of good resin saves the floor.

The CSP scale, in plain terms
The industry measures surface texture on a Concrete Surface Profile scale running from CSP 1 to CSP 9. CSP 1 is barely textured, roughly what acid etching gives you. CSP 9 is heavily gouged, the kind of aggressive profile you get from scarifying or heavy scabbling. In between sits everything real work gets done on.
The rule that matters: the thicker the coating, the deeper the profile it needs. Thin sealers and dye systems live at the shallow end. A standard epoxy or polyaspartic garage build generally wants something in the CSP 2 to CSP 3 range, which is what a good diamond grind produces. Self-levelling mortars, heavy build epoxies and urethane cement systems want CSP 4 and up, and that means shot blasting or scarifying, not grinding.
There are reference coupons, physical rubber panels cast to each profile, that you can hold against the floor to compare. It is a genuinely useful sanity check and it takes about five seconds.
Method follows profile, not habit
Once you know the profile you need, the method picks itself. Diamond grinding covers CSP 1 through 3 and is the right answer for the large majority of residential and light commercial coating work. Shot blasting covers roughly CSP 3 through 5 and is what you reach for on big open square footage. Scarifying and milling go deeper still, CSP 5 and beyond, for heavy removal or thick build systems.
The failure mode we see most often is a crew that owns one machine and therefore prepares every floor the same way. A grinder used on a floor that needed shot blasting leaves an under-profiled surface. A scarifier used where a grind would have done leaves gouges that telegraph straight through a thin coating.
It also runs the other way round in cost terms. Bringing a shot blaster to a two-car garage is expensive overkill, and any honest contractor will tell you so.
Moisture, laitance and the things that are not visible
Profile is only half of preparation. The other half is what the concrete is doing. Florida slabs sit on sandy subgrade with a high water table, and moisture vapor moves upward through them continuously. A film-forming coating over a slab with high vapor transmission traps that moisture and it comes off in blisters, sometimes months later.
That is why we test rather than guess. Calcium chloride testing measures how much moisture comes out of a set area of slab over a set period. Relative humidity probes sit in drilled holes and read conditions inside the concrete itself, which is the more reliable of the two. If the readings are high, the answer is a moisture-mitigating primer, not optimism.
We also look for efflorescence, the white crystalline bloom that says water is moving through the slab and depositing salts on the way out, and we sound the floor for hollow areas before we commit to anything. Finding these things at quoting is cheap. Finding them after the resin is down is not.

What happens before any resin comes out
This page is the preparation. It is the part of the job nobody photographs and the only part that decides whether a coating is still down in year eight.
Grinding comes first, always. Diamond tooling opens the surface so the coating has something to bite into, because a coating bonds mechanically rather than by sticking. The etching kit sold with retail epoxy does almost nothing to a slab that was power troweled smooth, which is most of them.
Moisture is the second reading. Concrete here pushes water vapor up through itself day and night, and a coating that seals it in will blister and let go regardless of what it cost. High numbers mean a moisture-tolerant primer goes down first, not that we carry on and hope.
Cracks get chased out to a clean edge and filled rather than skimmed over, spalls and pop-outs get rebuilt, and any previous coating comes off entirely. Only when the slab is sound, open and dry does anything get mixed.
The finish is what you see. The grind underneath it is what decides whether you are still happy in year eight, and it is where we spend the time other quotes save money.
It is also why we will occasionally tell someone their slab needs repair before it needs a coating. A floor that should be fixed structurally is not a floor we will put resin on, because the crack comes back through and then it is our name on it.

How much does concrete surface preparation cost?
Price follows square footage, the condition of the slab and the system you choose. A sound slab that only needs grinding costs far less to prepare than one with cracks, old coating or a moisture problem. We look at the floor and give you a real number rather than a range that means nothing.
How long does concrete surface preparation take?
Most residential work is two to four days on site depending on size and system. Commercial and industrial floors are scheduled around your hours and often run nights or weekends. You get exact dates before we start, including when you can walk on it and when you can put weight on it.
Do you grind the floor first?
Always. Diamond grinding is the only way to get a profile the coating can key into, and it is the single biggest reason floors either last or fail. We do not acid etch and we do not coat over a sealed slab.
What about moisture in the slab?
Florida slabs move water upward constantly, and vapor trapped under a coating is a guaranteed failure. We take a reading before quoting. If the numbers are high we specify a moisture-tolerant primer rather than pretending the problem is not there.
Can you match a color or a look I have seen?
Usually. We carry eighteen flake blends and mix metallic per floor, so bring a photo, a cabinet door or a paint chip and we will get close. We put samples down in your own light before you commit.
