Everyone with a grinder says they diamond grind. What separates a floor that bonds from one that does not is which diamonds went on the machine, in what order, and whether whoever chose them understood the slab they were standing on.

Metal bond and resin bond do different jobs
Metal bond segments hold industrial diamonds in a sintered metal matrix. They cut aggressively, they are what you use to remove material and open a slab, and they leave scratch pattern behind on purpose. Resin bond tooling holds the diamonds in a softer polymer, cuts far more gently, and is what refines a surface rather than removes it.
For coating preparation we live almost entirely in metal bond, because the goal is an open profile, not a pretty one. For a polished grind and seal we start in metal and step up through resins until the scratch pattern closes and the floor starts returning light.
Using resin tooling to prepare a coating floor is a common shortcut. It goes fast, it looks clean, and it burnishes the surface closed instead of opening it. The floor then looks beautifully prepared and bonds like glass.
Grit progression, and why you cannot skip steps
Diamond grits work the way sandpaper does. A coarse segment, somewhere in the 16 to 30 range, does heavy removal and leaves deep scratches. Each subsequent step exists to remove the scratches the previous step left, which is why the progression roughly doubles: 30, then 60, then 80 or 100, and on a polish run upward from there.
Jump from a 30 straight to a 200 and the 200 will never reach the bottom of the 30 grit scratches. The floor looks finished under work lights and then shows a haze of deep tramlines the first time afternoon sun comes through the garage door at a low angle. On a metallic pour, where the gloss magnifies everything, that is the whole job ruined.
For a coating we usually stop somewhere in the 30 to 80 range depending on the system going down. Stopping there is deliberate. Going finer would close the profile we just spent hours creating.
Reading the slab and matching the bond
Here is the part that catches people out. Soft concrete wears diamonds slowly, so it needs a hard bond that releases the diamonds grudgingly. Hard concrete wears diamonds fast, so it needs a soft bond that keeps exposing fresh cutting edges. Get it backwards on a hard slab and the segments glaze over, stop cutting, and start polishing.
You find out by cutting a test patch and watching how the machine behaves and what comes into the vacuum. That takes a few minutes and it is why our crew turns up with several sets of tooling rather than one.
Florida slabs vary more than you would expect across a single job, particularly where a garage was extended or a lanai was poured years after the house. It is not unusual to change tooling partway across one floor.
Preparation
What happens before any resin comes out
This page is the preparation. It is the part of the job nobody photographs and the only part that decides whether a coating is still down in year eight.
Grinding comes first, always. Diamond tooling opens the surface so the coating has something to bite into, because a coating bonds mechanically rather than by sticking. The etching kit sold with retail epoxy does almost nothing to a slab that was power troweled smooth, which is most of them.
Moisture is the second reading. Concrete here pushes water vapor up through itself day and night, and a coating that seals it in will blister and let go regardless of what it cost. High numbers mean a moisture-tolerant primer goes down first, not that we carry on and hope.
Cracks get chased out to a clean edge and filled rather than skimmed over, spalls and pop-outs get rebuilt, and any previous coating comes off entirely. Only when the slab is sound, open and dry does anything get mixed.
The finish is what you see. The grind underneath it is what decides whether you are still happy in year eight, and it is where we spend the time other quotes save money.
It is also why we will occasionally tell someone their slab needs repair before it needs a coating. A floor that should be fixed structurally is not a floor we will put resin on, because the crack comes back through and then it is our name on it.

Diamond Grinding questions
How much does diamond grinding cost?
Price follows square footage, the condition of the slab and the system you choose. A sound slab that only needs grinding costs far less to prepare than one with cracks, old coating or a moisture problem. We look at the floor and give you a real number rather than a range that means nothing.
How long does diamond grinding take?
Most residential work is two to four days on site depending on size and system. Commercial and industrial floors are scheduled around your hours and often run nights or weekends. You get exact dates before we start, including when you can walk on it and when you can put weight on it.
Do you grind the floor first?
Always. Diamond grinding is the only way to get a profile the coating can key into, and it is the single biggest reason floors either last or fail. We do not acid etch and we do not coat over a sealed slab.
What about moisture in the slab?
Florida slabs move water upward constantly, and vapor trapped under a coating is a guaranteed failure. We take a reading before quoting. If the numbers are high we specify a moisture-tolerant primer rather than pretending the problem is not there.
Can you match a color or a look I have seen?
Usually. We carry eighteen flake blends and mix metallic per floor, so bring a photo, a cabinet door or a paint chip and we will get close. We put samples down in your own light before you commit.
